Our ever-evolving homestead

The garden has exploded! We have so so much lettuce. I’m not complaining, but if you want any, come on over and take a few bags home. It’s great to go out and pick our dinner salad at the end of the day. And in the morning, we pick strawberries. We also have kale that’s ready. Healthy healthy! I am looking forward to the cucumbers being ready – I plan on pickling! – but there are barely two leaves up, so we won’t be harvesting for quite some time. The zucchini are super leafy, the pumpkin patch is in the ground and our hops have a new structure to scale. It’s all very exciting!

Bryce is doing great. She had a stomach bug last week – she must’ve eaten something off the compost pile – but is back to normal now. Last night, we were sitting on the porch when we spotted two little animals chasing each other across the yard. It was a weasel chasing a bunny! We hadn’t seen a weasel yet – it looked like a cross between a chipmunk and a squirrel. They rounded the corner to go around the house, just as Bryce was stepping off the porch. The bunny shot past Bryce and under our house, but the weasel took one look at Bryce and turned on his heels – he was gone before Bryce could notice him. Bryce thought she cornered the bunny in a grass patch, but of course he was long gone. But she kept at the hunt for quite a while anyway.

Christian built a self-filling water bucket for the chickens. It’s filled with rainwater from the coop roof. So smart.

Our grape vines are flourishing - they could all be Concords, but we'll try to make some wine some anyway!

We thought they would be sour cherries, but they're sweet! Can't wait to spit the pits from the porch.
